Community What does that mean to you?   On June 2nd, 2018 we hosted our LIFE AGM –We had a great time talking about, learning about and sharing our knowledge about community.  How do you feel being part of your larger community?   What does it mean to you to be part of a community?  What geographical community do you live in?  What events happen in your community?  We explored all these aspects in 3 fun activities throughout the day.  There was lots of great discussions, chatter, laughter and joy!
We decided to begin our community journey creating gift baskets that people delivered to others in the community after the AGM!  Who wouldn’t want to receive a wonderful gift basket filled with great stuff?   Each table selected a gift bag filled with items to create a basket.  Once they opened the bag, they were presented with items connected to one of the following themes:  Pets, Gardening, Tea/Coffee, Picnic or Games!  As a group, the table then decided, “Who do we know in our community that would appreciate or love this basket?”  Once they decided who would be the recipient of the basket, they worked together to create a beautiful gift!  Then, everyone shared their beautiful creation, who they were planning to give it to and why!  It was a very powerful activity about community and reciprocity.  Baskets were delivered after the AGM and the response and appreciation has been tremendous.
A delicious lunch of salad and sandwiches was shared just before the AGM business began and cake was served by the LIFE team as the meeting started.
Stephen Walker, our Innovative Life Options Chairperson welcomed everyone and the business part of the AGM was underway.  Stephen thanked the people in attendance, and thanked the outgoing board members, Clare Simpson and Irene Maendel for their many years of contribution. Our treasurer, Evelyn Yelinek, presented the 2017/2018 audited financial statement which was approved by membership and membership also approved of several new board members starting a term on the Board.  Our chair, Stephen Walker presented his report and our Executive Director, Patti Chiappetta provided an overview of activities over the last year, thanked the 65 ICOF employers for their commitment to the model and expressed her gratitude to the wonderful LIFE team and awesome Board of Directors.
The day came to a close with a few fun filled games about the geographical communities in which we live.  Wow!  People sure know a lot about their communities!

Gladstone manitoba AKA Happy RockEveryone worked together to match monuments to the town!

Everyone worked together to post interesting facts about 8 Manitoba communities, such as,
  • There is a Marine Museum located close to the Red River.
Portage la Prairie
  • Has the largest standing Coca Cola monument
Swan River
  • This community is Manitoba’s 15th largest in population.

And finally, tables worked together to complete a brain teaser trying to determine which town the picture represented!

Many thanks to everyone for attending. We are excited that you are part of our LIFE community and we look forward to seeing you each year!
Special thanks to the LIFE Board for your many contributions throughout the year.  Your knowledge and dedication is very much appreciated.
Thank you to the LIFE team for their creativity and hard work to make the AGM a fun and inspiring day.  Congratulations Liz for 5 years of service!

FAQ's about the AGM...

  • What is an AGM?
An AGM is an Annual General Meeting (annual means it happens once a year).  An AGM is a business meeting for the members of the organization so that they can find out how well LIFE managed the business over the past year.  Every single participant of In the Company of Friends and his/her support network is a member of LIFE automatically, at no charge.  Other people in the community can become members if they are interested but they need to pay $5.00.

  • Why do we have an AGM?
As an organization supported by the government and the community, it is a law that LIFE must have an AGM every single year.  It is the time that everyone gets together and talks about all the things that the organization has done over the year and the way in which money was spent.  An AGM is there to ensure that LIFE is accountable.  Being accountable means LIFE is being responsible to the members and letting them know that they are doing the best work that they can.

  • What happens at the AGM?
    Three things happen each year.

First, the auditor (an accountant who has reviewed all the expenses and bank statements) presents a report to let the membership know that money is being handled correctly.

Second, the President of the Board and the Executive Director will provide a report which outlines the things that have happened over the year.

And lastly, there will be elections for the Board of Directors.  The Board of Directors is a volunteer group of people who agree to meet regularly and make important decisions for LIFE.

“Working together, ordinary people
can perform extraordinary feats.
They can push things that come into
their hands a little higher up, a little
further on towards the heights
of excellence.”
