| | Hi. My name is Patrick, and I wanted to share a little bit about finding my family with all of you here today.
One of my dreams was always to find my family, as I always felt I had one, but have been alone my whole life. Last year my friend Lynda and I started finding out what we had to do to get information.
In January, 2008, we wrote a letter to the department of Child and Family Services asking for information. I had to write the letter and provide proof that I was who I was, because they wouldn’t give that information to just anyone.
A few weeks later, we received a letter in the mail. It told me my mother’s name and birth date. It also told me I had a sister, and showed her birth date as well. I found out why I’d been given up at birth, and what my Mother had hoped for me.
After we had that information, Lynda started looking on the internet. After many days of searching, she found a person we thought might be my sister. We decided to write to her, and the very next morning she wrote back that she’d been looking for me for years!! That night we talked on the phone. I found out I had nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins. I also found out my Mother was still alive, and that I also had a brother in Alberta.
In February Lynda, Cecil, Mark and I all travelled to Saskatoon to meet my family for the first time in my life! It was a very exciting day… but I was very nervous! I ended up spending the rest of the weekend getting to know my family, and hope to go back there again this summer for another visit.
Finding my family was a dream come true for me! I’ve wanted to do that for a long, long time, and now it’s finally happened! I want to thank the friends that helped me to see this dream come true.
